How does Shopify URL creation logic work?
Imagine a user browsing your store, clicking through collections, filters and product variations. Each click adds a layer to the URL, creating a unique path for their journey. While convenient for navigation, this can lead to a multitude of non-canonical URLs – confusing for both users and search engines.
For example, you have a product that is called "Test" and it is in a collection called "Example". If customers first enter collection "Example" and select product "Test" they will appear on the following URL -> www.domain.com/collections/example/products/test instead of the canonical URL of www.domain.com/products/test.
Help search engines and customers
What are the disadvantages of the current setup?
- User disorientation: Non-canonical URLs create a confusing experience for users, potentially impacting navigation and trust.
- Search engine ambiguity: Multiple URLs for the same product may dilute search engine authority, negatively affecting organic visibility.
- Redirect complexities: Managing redirects for dynamically generated URLs requires significant time and technical expertise, demanding more management time.
- Data fragmentation: Tracking user behavior and performance across multiple URLs becomes fragmented, making it difficult for accurate analysis and optimization.
- Conversion limitations: Confusion caused by non-canonical URLs can lead to missed opportunities and lower conversion rates.
